Why We Chose This
MoMA has a long history of examining masks from a design perspective. In the 1962 exhibition Design for Sport staged in MoMA’s sculpture garden, a number of masks geared toward athletics were on display. MoMA’s 1991 exhibition Modern Masks and Helmets documented 20th-century designs created to help ensure our safety in everyday occupations and some of life’s pleasures, like sports, but also our survival in the face of life-threatening situations. In the 2005 MoMA exhibition SAFE: Design Takes On Risk a number of mask designs were exhibited alongside a range of objects designed to protect the body and mind from dangerous or stressful circumstances, respond to emergencies, and provide a sense of comfort and security. At MoMA Design Store we continue this legacy of offering masks—designs for pleasure in some instances, and protection and peace of mind in others.
In or Related to MoMA Exhibitions
The Museum of Modern Art has revolutionized what a museum exhibition can be. MoMA has sought to document and respond to important developments in the field of design as they happen. As MoMA continues to innovate and lead at the forefront of art and design exhibitions, MoMA Design Store mirrors that spirit of exploration by discovering ever-new and original products, many seen for the first time in MoMA Exhibitions.
