MoMA Artist Masks
MoMA Exclusive: Show your appreciation for artists in MoMA’s collection with artwork-inspired masks. Each of these lightweight, comfortable double-layer masks is made from polyester with a cotton lining and features elastic and adjustable ear loops, a bendable nose wire and carrying pouch made from recycled plastic bottle fabric (PET) with a handy carabiner for attaching to a belt loop or bag strap. Each Artist Mask is sold separately. One size fits most. The pouch is large enough to hold two masks.
Each mask features details from an artwork in MoMA's collection. Artists and works include:
Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night Saint Rémy (1889)
Claude Monet’s Water Lilies (1914–26)
Alma Woodsey Thomas’ Untitled (c. 1968)
Carmen Herrera’s Untitled (1952)
Ed Ruscha OOF (1962)
Takashi Murakami Flowers (2021)

These double-layer mask designs are intended for general use as an extra precaution, together with social distancing and hand washing, and are not a replacement for medical masks. One size fits most. Hand wash warm and line dry. Do not iron.

Why We Chose This
MoMA has a long history of examining masks from a design perspective. In the 1962 exhibition Design for Sport staged in MoMA’s sculpture garden, a number of masks geared toward athletics were on display. MoMA’s 1991 exhibition Modern Masks and Helmets documented 20th-century designs created to help ensure our safety in everyday occupations and some of life’s pleasures, like sports, but also our survival in the face of life-threatening situations. In the 2005 MoMA exhibition SAFE: Design Takes On Risk a number of mask designs were exhibited alongside a range of objects designed to protect the body and mind from dangerous or stressful circumstances, respond to emergencies, and provide a sense of comfort and security. At MoMA Design Store we continue this legacy of offering masks—designs for pleasure in some instances, and protection and peace of mind in others.

The Museum of Modern Art established the world's first curatorial department devoted to architecture and design. MoMA Design Store carries a selection of design objects from that collection. We only offer authorized versions in the colors and materials selected by the original designers. MoMA's design collection is ever-changing, a reflection of the evolving field of design itself.
