Why We Chose This
At MoMA Design Store, we're always looking for innovative eco-friendly materials. These Swatch Watches are made of a material that combines bio-sourced plastic with ceramic. Bio-based plastics are made using biological resources instead of fossil raw materials such as petroleum.
Swatch was founded in 1983 and they began by launching 12 Swiss-made quartz movement watches that were water- and shock-resistant, and characterized by fun color combinations. Their watches, made with only 51 pieces, are meant to be another option to daily accessorizing (their name is a contraction for “second watch”). Swatch has three designs in MoMA’s collection and their work has been included in exhibitions staged at the Museum, including Items: Is Fashion Modern? (2017–2018) and Humble Masterpieces (2004).
