Snoopy by Charles Schulz
Snoopy by Charles Schulz

Created in 1950 by Charles M. Schulz, Snoopy is an illustrated, anthropomorphic beagle featured in Schulz’s Peanuts comic strips and animated cartoons. The original drawings of Snoopy were inspired by Spike, one of Schulz’s childhood dogs. Over the decade, Snoopy has taken on an iconic status as much for his minimal, immediately recognizable form as for his imaginative (and at times insouciant) personality. Snoopy’s profile even inspired the designers, brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, who have work in MoMA’s collection, when they named their 1967 redesign of a classic bankers lamp, “the Snoopy Lamp.” Like his Peanuts costar Charlie Brown and Dick Bruna’s beloved bunny Miffy, Snoopy is a personality we’re drawn to because he appeals equally to children and adults.
