Ellsworth Kelly
Ellsworth Kelly

Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) was an American artist celebrated for his bold use of color, shape, and form. Working across painting, sculpture, and printmaking, he created crisp, abstract works that often drew from real-world observations—shadows, leaves, architecture—but distilled them into pure, vibrant forms. Influenced by time spent in postwar France and inspired by everything from Romanesque art to modernist buildings, Kelly developed a distinctive visual language that helped define American abstraction. Over 300 of his works are in MoMA's collection and have been featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum.
