A 3D-printed lamp that combines southwestern tradition with Brooklyn innovation.

MoMA Exclusive: Named for the paper bag lanterns that are popular in New Mexico, the Farolito Table Lamp (farolito is lantern in Spanish) is 3D-printed from recycled plastic. Conceived by designer Sean Kim of the Brooklyn-based design studio Wooj, the Farolito Lamp mimics a humble paper lunch bag, complete with the distinct crease where the bag is typically folded and flat-packed appearing on two sides of the shade. The light-brown lamp is produced in a shape that is exclusive to our customers and gives off a soft glow.

“The shape of this lamp was inspired by a disposable paper bag,” explains designer Sean Kim. “When we posted an early version of it online, someone commented that it looked like a farolito. I was curious, so I looked it up and discovered this whole culture built around exactly that: paper bags with little candles in them.”

“We used fused deposition modeling. The simplest way to describe FDM is a hot glue gun on the end of a robot. You deposit material layer on layer and fuse it as you go. FDM is the most common form of 3D printing.”

“For the Farolito, the form began as a 3D san of a real paper bag, which we then brought into modeling software and added detail to it. The geometry starts from an actual object rather than something drawn from scratch.”

Sean Kim is the founder of the Brooklyn-based company Wooj. The brand utilizes a combination of robotics and craft manufacturing techniques to create products at a low cost without exploitative labor. Kim loves 3D printing because it empowers ideas to become physical products in a matter of hours instead of weeks, and eliminates the need for mass production for factories. His Wavy Lamp has become a social media hit.
