A halogen bulb illuminates the base with a warm glow, while an incandescent emits additional diffused light from the top of the column. The silver-finished steel base is weighted to keep the luminous cylinder stable. Both the designer and the lamp’s manufacturer, Flos, are represented in MoMA’s collection. During his 52-year career, he designed and collaborated on nearly 150 design objects, from lamps to cameras to car seats. His work is known for combining simplicity with fun, along with close attention to how objects are used in real life. In 1997, MoMA launched the first individual retrospective of his work with the exhibition \u003cem\u003eAchille Castiglioni: Design!\u003c\/em\u003e Prior to that, his designs were featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum, including \u003cem\u003eThe Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design\u003c\/em\u003e (1954) and \u003cem\u003eRecent Acquisitions: Design\u003c\/em\u003e (1967-8 and 1970-1). Castiglioni’s work has had a significant impact on the history of the applied arts and has taught generations about good design.
