As part of a collection inspired by the 1984 Swatch World Breakdance Championship, this timepiece uses the original art Haring created for the competition’s poster but reimagined in monochrome. The special accessory features a black dial, black strap, and distinctive matte black square case in bio-sourced glass. Designed down to the last detail, the arrow-shaped hands glow in the dark while the matte black battery cover depicts Swatch’s logo as drawn by Haring.

Why We Chose This
When Keith Haring, an artist with work in MoMA's collection, designed the World Breakdance Championship poster for Swatch in 1984, he was in the middle of his rise to stardom, and his work was commanding high prices. Yet he still continued to draw in the subways and enjoyed giving his work away for free. The Swatch poster became an instant collector's item, with Haring's fans carefully peeling them off hoardings and other public places in New York City.

One of the key figures in New York's East Village art scene in the 1970s and 1980s, Keith Haring developed a unique and distinctly personal vocabulary of bold, graphic icons—barking dogs, flying saucers, winged figures, and a crawling “radiant baby”—which he combined with abstract marks and patterns in densely packed compositions. An artist in the Museum’s collection, Haring’s work has been included in a number of MoMA exhibitions, starting in 1981 in MoMA PS1’s New York/New Wave exhibition and more recently in Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900–2000 in 2012.
