MoMA Exclusive: A pop icon of French design, the Tam-Tam Stool was designed by Henry Masonnet in 1968 who was an amateur fisherman. He designed the hourglass-shaped, hollow stool for himself because its extremely lightweight design makes it easy to carry around.

The stool's shape is inspired by a drum: in French "tam-tam" refers to a tambour africain, or tom-tom drum. The Tam-Tam Stool quickly became a best seller and 1960s icon after a photo of Brigitte Bardot sitting on it made the rounds.

The Tam-Tam Stool can be used as seating anywhere around your home and outside (they’re perfect for poolside gatherings). Sought after by vintage design fans, the Tam-Tam Stool is available again, made in France from polypropylene. It measures 17.7h x 12"diam. Clean with warm water and a non-abrasive soap using a clean microfiber cloth. Do not use any harsh chemicals or abrasive surfaces.

Why We Chose This
Considered one of the most famous plastic designs ever, the Tam-Tam's original heyday began in the late 1960s and lasted until the 1980s. The stool was reissued in 2002 and is still manufactured at the same factory in France. In 2022, this pop-culture icon is only available as a MoMA Exclusive.
