Produced by Vitra and represented in MoMA’s collection, this 20th-century design icon is crafted in the USA from polyurethane foam with an ultra-modern glossy lacquer finish. Why We Chose This
Verner Panton's 1959 cantilevered chair represents a landmark moment in 20th-century design as the first single-piece molded seat. Panton embraced the fluid potential of new materials to create an expressive, undulating silhouette that mirrors the curves of the human body. A classic of the Space Age era that is represented in MoMA's collection, the chair is a striking example of sculpture doubling as everyday furniture. The Panton Chair has been featured in the Museum's exhibitions, such as Architecture and Design: Inaugural Installation (2004–2005).

Known for his futuristic designs in a variety of materials, particularly plastic, Verner Panton (1926–1998) is considered one of Denmark's most influential designers of the last century. Although his designs for the home and office have a distinct 1960s style, they have attained a timeless appeal. His work in MoMA's collection includes the Stacking Side Chair (1959–1960), a gravity-defying design made from fiber-reinforced plastic. His furniture and lighting designs have appeared in exhibitions at the Museum, including Architecture and Design: Inaugural Installation (2004–2005).
