Celebrated Dutch artist Dick Bruna (1927–2017) was best-known for the over 120 children’s books he authored and illustrated. The most famous character who appeared in many of the books was Miffy, a small bunny drawn with heavy graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colors. The inspiration for Miffy came during a family holiday in 1955, when Bruna spotted a bunny hopping around and later, began drawing it. (The name Miffy is “Nijntje” in Dutch—a word a child in the Netherlands might use as the diminutive for “konijntje,” or “little rabbit.”) Miffy debuted in storybook form that same year, with the publication of Nijntje, followed by Miffy at the Zoo. 32 subsequent books featuring Miffy were published up until 2018.
