This book records the fourth exhibition of the paintings of Henri Matisse held at The Museum of Modern Art. The first, directed by Alfred H. Barr Jr., was in 1931, the Museum's second year. In 1951, upon the occasion of large retrospective also directed by Mr. Barr, the Museum published his monumental volume, Matisse: His Art and His Public. It was definitive as of that date, when Matisse still had three prolific years before him. The great cut gouaches of Matisse's last phase were shown separately in 1961. 63 pp. Published in 1966 and edited by Lawrence Gowing, this rare book from MoMA Publications is available in extremely limited quantities. Each book from this special selection has been stored for decades in MoMA’s warehouse. MoMA’s award-winning publications program has been an integral part of the Museum’s mission since its founding in 1929.
