When Danish designer Hans Wegner unveiled the CH70 Shell Chair in 1963, it was praised by critics for its avant-garde look, even if the general public was not yet convinced. Today, the chair that is considered Wegner’s masterpiece still seems futuristic. Characterized by graceful swoops of bent wood, such as the winglike seat and curved backrest, the CH70 achieves a floating lightness. Its design is a testament to Wegner’s belief that a chair should always be comfortable—and should be beautiful no matter what angle it’s being viewed from. The Shell Chair is made in Denmark from bent laminated walnut wood with an oil finish, and is upholstered in a beautiful leather with a protective finish for easy maintenance. The laminated legs are composed of multiple layers of veneer, while the two front legs are made from a single element. This contributes to the chair’s stable and unique form. The seat and backrest features upholstered leather within form-pressed veneer, creating an amazing amount of comfort. Hans Wegner’s work is represented in MoMA’s collection. The CH70 Shell Chair measures 29h x 36w x 32.6"d. Seat Height:13.8"h.
