A quick and attractive way to boil water, this Electric Kettle was designed by a founder of the Memphis Design Group, George Sowden, for Danish brand HAY. Quirky and colorful, this Kettle doubles as a piece of sculpture on your kitchen counter. The kettle sits on a separate power source and a switch turns off automatically approximately 20 or 30 seconds after water reaches a boil. Use it to boil water for tea, coffee, instant noodles and more. For one pint of water, boil time is approximately three minutes; for one quart, boil time is approximately five minutes. The HAY George Sowden Electric Kettle has a polypropylene outer shell and a stainless steel interior, holds 50.7 oz and measures 9.9h x 8.7w x 6.5"d. It is powered by a standard plug-in and has a 35”-long cord that can coil under the base for storage. HAY is a manufacturer with work in MoMA’s collection.

HAY George Sowden Electric Kettle
Why We Chose This
UK-born designer George Sowden was born in the UK and moved to Milan in 1970 where he started working with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti. In 1981, along with Sotsass, Nathalie du Pasquier and other young designers, he founded the Memphis Design Group. In 2010 he founded SOWDEN and over the years he has worked as a designer and product developer for many global brands, including HAY, a manufacturer with work in MoMA's collection.

  • HAY

HAY, founded in 2002 in Denmark by husband-and-wife team Mette and Rolf Hay, was born with the idea of offering thoughtful, functional, beautiful and high-quality designs at accessible prices. HAY is represented as a manufacturer in MoMA’s collection with several objects, such as the Prince Chair, a 2002 design by Louise Campbell. Devised for a competition to create a chair for the Crown Prince of Denmark, its seat resembles an unfolded paper cutout. Another design in the collection, Stefan Diez’s 2013 Rope Trick Lamp, is inspired by power transfer coils common to CNC hardware.

Authenticity Guarantee

At MoMA Design Store, all of the designs we sell are curator-approved and authentic. We ensure the integrity of our products through research and by working closely with the designers. Our products embody the spirit of good design objects in MoMA's collection. Some of them are actual designs represented in the Museum's collection.
