Hinoki Stool
Description
Beautiful in its simplicity, the Hinoki Stool is handcrafted in Japan from sustainably forested hinoki, a durable Japanese cypress wood traditionally used in temples for its pleasant scent and soft-touch feel. The wood is from Gifu province, where the organization More Trees funds the replanting of forests. The design is by Jasper Morrison, whose work is part of MoMA’s collection, and Wataru Kumano. Hinoki Stools come flat, easy to assemble and suitable for outdoor use. A part of the proceeds from sales of the Hinoki Stool will be used for forest conservation activities. Available in One-Seater or Two-Seater sizes.
Why We Chose This
Watura Kumano created these stools with British designer Jasper Morrison, whose work is represented in MoMA's collection. The pair designed the stools to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Japanese forest conservation organization More Trees. The organization promotes the use of local forests, creating a sustainable model for wood production. Produced from hinoki wood grown in plentiful forests, the stools are made with high-end craftsmanshop, ensuring they can be used for a lifetime.

In or Related to MoMA's Collection
The Museum of Modern Art established the world's first curatorial department devoted to architecture and design. MoMA Design Store carries a selection of design objects from that collection. We only offer authorized versions in the colors and materials selected by the original designers. MoMA's design collection is ever-changing, a reflection of the evolving field of design itself.
