Donald Judd Front Shelf Chair 84
Handmade in the USA from natural pinewood, the Front Shelf Chair 84 was designed in 1982 by Donald Judd, an artist represented in MoMA’s collection. This 30h x 15”w chair is part of a series of chair studies that focused on interior planes—in the case of this chair, a horizontal panel is incorporated into the chair halfway between the seat and floor. The Front Shelf Chair is made to Judd’s original specifications, and is stamped and numbered. You may experience this chair in person outside of MoMA’s exhibition Judd at our 6th floor store, now through July 11, 2020. Touching and sitting in the chair is encouraged.
Donald Judd designed furniture in both wood and metal, with a specific approach to proportion and scale, fabrication and exhibition. He outlined his furniture-design philosophy in an essay titled, “It’s Hard to Find a Good Lamp.”
