Inspired by Victorian plaster ceiling ornaments, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ pendant lamp playfully suspends an illuminated “garden” overhead. A gracefully hanging hemisphere of aluminum alloy houses a surprise: a floral lining crafted from white-painted cast plaster with a blown opal glass and photo-etched steel diffuser. It makes a distinctive statement suspended over a dining or library table. Installation required. Made in Italy by Flos, a manufacturer which reproduces many of the iconic lighting designs in the MoMA collection. Wanders’ work has been featured in several of the Museum’s exhibitions, including Thresholds: Contemporary Design from the Netherlands (1996) and This Is for Everyone: Design Experiments for the Common Good (2015-6).
