For these streamlined, molded polypropylene designs, the concept was simple: accessibly priced chairs in subdued colors, designed for everyday use. "Not too loud, not too shy. Just exactly balanced," explains Ronan Bouroullec of the chair he designed with his brother Erwan. These versatile chairs can be used throughout your home, in the dining room, living room and outdoors on the patio. Available in four colors, you can choose one or mix them together for a statement-making effect.

A result of years of work and experience, Élémentaire uses the latest technology to create a chair that is robust and long-lasting object while still appearing delicate. Precise proportions and a clear profile give this indoor/outdoor chair a charm that allows it to stand out on its own or look strong in a group. Designed for everyday life, Élémentaire fulfils basic needs in a balance of beauty and strength. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and the manufacturer HAY, are represented in MoMA’s collection.

HAY Élémentaire Chairs
Why We Chose This
Keeping with our mission to make good design accessible to a broad audience, the Élémentaire Chair is democratic in both its pricing and material. "It's simple and inexpensive, like a white t-shirt or blue jeans," state the Bouroullec brothers, whose work is represented in MoMA's collection. The brothers were motivated to design the Élémentaire because they were unsatisfied with the plastic chairs currently on the market.
