This modern classic Storage Unit from Charles and Ray Eames is reissued by the original manufacturer, Herman Miller. A result of work for a 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, this piece reveals the "machine aesthetic" and Japanese influences important to the Eameses at the time. Long before "modularity" and "high tech" entered design language, Charles and Ray Eames combined standardized parts in many ways to create practical furnishings that suit a variety of uses. The cabinet fronts are dimpled plywood, the drawer fronts and shelves are molded plywood, the side and back panels are painted hardboard, and uprights, cross-supports, and perforated panels are zinc-coated steel. The nylon glides on the feet protect floors.
