Aalto Vase - Iittala Recycled Glass Edition
MoMA Exclusive: Iittala has brought new life to Alvar Aalto’s iconic vase with their Recycled Glass Program—limited-edition pieces that use post-industrial glass from Iittala's factory in Finland. This new, sustainable procedure of producing glassware renders each piece unique, in variation of blues, greens and natural earthy shades. Unlike typical recycled glass, Iittala’s process produces minimal bubbles but there may be small visual imperfections which give the 100% recycled collection its unique charm. But like all Iittala products, the vase is as durable as designs made of virgin material. This Aalto Vase from Iittala’s Recycled Glass Collection measures 6.25h x 8w x 7"d. The original design for the Aalto Vase is an object represented in MoMA’s collection.
Please note that each piece is unique and variance in color may occur.
Why We Chose This
At Iittala, skilled artisans are always researching new ways to produce glass. At the brand's factories in Finland, all waste glass is reused and recycled, an initiative that saves both energy and natural resources. Waste glass is produced during the post-processing of mouth-blown glass, the pouring of molten glass and as a result of quality control. The Recycled Glass Edition of Alvar Aalto's famous vase is a result of Iittala's long-term goal of recovering or recycling all waste from its operations.
The Museum of Modern Art has always been attuned to the close relationship between design and materials—and seeks to represent ways designers employ new materials and technology to improve an object’s function. MoMA Design Store offers products that reflect new advancements in the materials designers are using at the moment they emerge.
