For Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, naming their floor lamp toio (“toy”) was a natural: It blends an industrial aesthetic with a whimsical form and function. But its accolades are serious, earning the 1962 design a place in the Museum's permanent collection. An enameled steel base supports a hexagonal, nickel-plated brass stem fitted with fishing rod rings that guide the electrical cord from the bulb to the transformer. The headlight-inspired lamp moves up and down the stem, while a cleat serves to keep the cord neatly coiled when the lamp is adjusted to a lower height. Made in Italy. The playfully utilitarian design adds a bright burst of illumination to any corner. Both the designers and the manufacturer, Flos, are represented in MoMA’s collection. Designed by Achille Castiglioni for FLOS.

Born in Milan in 1918, Achille Castiglioni is an internationally acknowledged master of Italian design. During his 52-year career, he designed and collaborated on nearly 150 design objects, from lamps to cameras to car seats. His work is known for combining simplicity with fun, along with close attention to how objects are used in real life. In 1997, MoMA launched the first individual retrospective of his work with the exhibition Achille Castiglioni: Design! Prior to that, his designs were featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum, including The Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design (1954) and Recent Acquisitions: Design (1967-8 and 1970-1). Castiglioni’s work has had a significant impact on the history of the applied arts and has taught generations about good design.
