Flos Splügen Bräu Pendant Light
An “avant-garde Scala” is how one patron described the Splügen Bräu Bar, an interior design icon in Milan where everyone seemed like a leading character. When the bar opened in 1960, brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed this pendant light for it. Their design invokes the buzz of its beehive form, making it vibrantly charming. The clear coated, spun aluminum reflector offers direct light for a kitchen island or library table. The pendant is complemented by a steel ceiling fitting and white gloss-finished rose. Installation required. Made in Italy. Both the designers and the manufacturer, Flos, are represented in MoMA’s collection. Designed by Achille Castiglioni for FLOS.

Born in Milan in 1918, Achille Castiglioni is an internationally acknowledged master of Italian design. During his 52-year career, he designed and collaborated on nearly 150 design objects, from lamps to cameras to car seats. His work is known for combining simplicity with fun, along with close attention to how objects are used in real life. In 1997, MoMA launched the first individual retrospective of his work with the exhibition Achille Castiglioni: Design! Prior to that, his designs were featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum, including The Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design (1954) and Recent Acquisitions: Design (1967-8 and 1970-1). Castiglioni’s work has had a significant impact on the history of the applied arts and has taught generations about good design.
