In 1952, the legendary designer George Nelson fell in love—with a Swedish hanging lamp that he felt would be perfect for his design office. Covered in silk, the lamp was priced so prohibitively that he decided to make his own version instead. That’s how the Nelson™ Angled Sphere Bubble Pendant was born. Shaped like a sphere with angles in its vertical arcs, the lamp’s light steel frame is overlaid with a transparent plastic spray acquired by Nelson from the US military, who developed it after WWII to help them preserve and store old warships and airplanes. Recently rediscovered by the venerable firm Herman Miller in George Nelson’s archives, the Nelson™ Angled Sphere Bubble Pendant is one of several shapes in Nelson’s series of pendant lamps.

Each pendant provides a soft, glowing light that adds warmth to interior rooms and draws one’s eye to its unique shape. It includes a ceiling plate of brushed, nickel-plated steel and a 10-foot cord, is UL listed, and fits a standard size bulb up to 150 watts (not included). The George Nelson™ Angled Sphere Bubble Pendant is available in sizes S (9.5h x 14w 9.5h x 14”diam.), M (15h x 20”w) and L (22h x 28”w). Installation required. George Nelson has work in MoMA’s collection.
