Erpa Trash Can
MoMA Exclusive. Who says a garbage bin can’t be beautiful? This classic pedal can, made in a small workshop in Germany, has sleek vintage appeal. The handsome exterior is made of powder-coated enamel stamped with Erpa’s original logo, and a high-gloss stainless steel lid. The sprung pedal mechanism can be locked to keep the lid open, while the interior metal waste bin is removable for easy trash disposal.
Why We Chose This
The Erpa Trash Bin, designed in 1928, was one of the first foot-pedal-operated waste containers of its kind. Josef Road, who founded the Erpa company in Germany, first devised the metal bin for use as sanitary containment in hospitals—the pedal mechanism allowed medical workers to avoid touching the top of the can and the tight lid helped maintain a hygienic environment. In the 1950s Josef’s sons, Fritz and Ernst, took over the company and eventually the Erpa evolved from a medical container to a waste collector for home use—and today it remains an icon of modern, efficient design.

Our selection starts with designers and manufacturers that were integral to the establishment of modern design, and whose iconic designs remain relevant today.
