Designer Panisa Khunprasert is from Bangkok, Thailand where she studied industrial design at Chulalongkorn University. Her design aesthetic has been influenced by growing up in her family’s toy business, and many of her early projects focused on children’s learning and playing experiences. She later moved to New York City where she attended The School of Visual Arts. She graduated with an MFA in the school’s Products of Design program, where she collaborated with MoMA on designs, and continues to design products for our store today.
“My father was very hands-on in his creative process and he began encouraging me to draw and make things when I was very young. I grew up playing with unfinished prototypes, broken toys and cardboard models in his office.”
“I noticed that most coasters are pretty on top but once you place a glass on them, the design is hidden. I designed these raised-edge coasters so they would still be attractive even when in use. The stacking feature adds totemic characteristics, so they also become tactile objects for play when they’re not being used as coasters.”
“New York City has been the city of my dreams since I was little, because I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps of studying and working here. Once you are in this city, you inevitably get inspired by its vibrant art and design scene—and its energy.”
