Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s chair invites you to slow down, sit, and relax in a remarkably lightweight design. Its gracefully shaped, slim steel frame holds an extremely strong knit fabric that contours to the sitter. This material also makes the chair translucent, adding visual lightness to the design. Available in various frame and cover combinations with included seat and back cushions, it offers colorful, casual seating for a living room or sun porch. The matching ottoman (sold separately) is made using the same innovative construction. Made in Germany by Vitra, a manufacturer of iconic modern furnishings that’s widely represented in MoMA’s collection.Â
Paris-based brothers and design partners Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have been working together since the mid-90s. Their work includes a wide range of designs, including furniture, home accents, and tech. Their earliest design in MoMA’s collection, the Square Vase, was created in 1999. Since then, several of the brothers’ designs have been added to the collection, and MoMA Design Store regularly seeks out the latest examples of their work, such as the Belleville Chair, a piece that manifests their core attributes of minimalism and elegance.
