Jo Gordon Shapes Wool Scarf
Learn more about our process
Description
MoMA Exclusive: Produced in designer Jo Gordonās homeland of Scotland from South African lambswool, this brightly patterned Shapes Scarf is made using yarn and dyes produced in a factory that follows Global Organic Textile Standards. The mill Gordon employs to spin this completely natural fiber uses processes that have been refined over the course of 120 years. Pure, soft water from the loch located next to the mill is used to wash the fibers. This gives the wool fibers their characteristic soft feel.
Gordon approaches each of her designs as a collaboration with the manufacturers. Together they discover new ways to interpret the design, such as using a production method in an unexpected way, reinterpreting an old technique, or resurrecting an archived, vintage pattern. Color is another important element in Gordonās work: she often uses complex color and pattern on simple forms to dramatically change their context and mood.
Long enough to wrap around your neck twice, this warm Jo Gordon Shapes Wool Scarf measures 66l x 11.4"w and is an eye-catching accessory for any fall or winter ensemble. Dry clean only.

Why We Chose This
The yarns for Jo Gordon's scarves may be produced in her homeland of Scotland but the raw wool is not localābecause of the UK's cold, damp climate, British sheep tend to grow very course fleece, which results in itchy wool. Gordon's raw wool is imported from South Africa where animal welfare standards are high (the practice of mulesing, considered cruel by many, is not used there). The Scottish mills where Gordon's wool fibers are spun use organic dyes that are 98% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which minimizes damage to the fibers and reduces the amount of waste produced. The mills where the yarn is knitted uses state-of-the-art Shima and Stoll knitting machines, which are engineered to minimize the waste of the precious natural material.
