anOrdain Model 1 Watch - Iron Cream Dial

From anOrdain—a bespoke timepiece company based in Glasgow, named after a Scottish loch—comes this exceptional Model 1 Watch. This mechanical watch is entirely hand-assembled in house by anOrdain’s small team of master watchmakers. The Model 1 is distinguished by the rich color of its face and hands, which are achieved by two different enameling techniques.

anOrdain is one of the only watchmakers in the world that produces enamel dials in-house. The vitreous enamel face, or dial, is created with a 12+ hour process (learned through many years of experience) that begins with a disc hand-cut from a copper sheet. Lump-form enamel (silica, red lead and soda ash) is then ground into powder and applied to the copper disc, which is then placed into a kiln heated to 1,526°F. After it’s removed and cooled, the face is examined for inclusions or bubbles, which are removed. The process is repeated several times until the correct depth of color and height is achieved. 

The clean, modern hands of the Model 1 are made using a different, age-old enameling technique: steel blueing. Each hand is cut out of a sheet of steel and then hand polished. Heat is then applied to give the hands their color. Timing and practice is key here as the desired color passes quickly on the spectrum.
