The M’Afrique collection of brightly colored indoor/outdoor furniture pieces is handmade at workshops in Dakar, Senegal as part of Patrizia Moroso’s initiative to showcase modern Africa’s creativity and innovative use of materials and weaving. The designs are crafted from painted steel overlaid with woven thread and wire—the same as is used in the local fishing industry. Moroso, a manufacturer in MoMA’s collection, worked with international designers Tord Boontje, Sebastian Herkner and Concetta Giannangeli to create the M’Afrique collection.
The M’Afrique Banjooli Table is a circular table with a small hole in the center. The woven pattern of the table’s surface recalls the overlapping of scales or feathers, and is inspired by the wing-spreading courtship dance of the male ostrich, or banjooli in the Wolof language. The M’Afrique Banjooli Table is available in two colors: Black/Yellow and Red/Green styles.
