Zeilmaker Chair
Description
This subdued dark green version of Gerrit Rietveld’s famous Red Blue Chair features the same architectural lines based on his philosophy of “well-being and comfort of the spirit.” The chair was initially produced in completely unpainted wood around 1918. The original Rietveld chair designs were based on the concept of spatial organization expressed through monochrome tones. Later examples incorporate various colors depending on the requirements of Rietveld’s customers and their interiors for which the chairs were intended. The Zeilmaker Chair was originally created for a school teacher: black frame, white ends and dark-green painted seat and backrest. The Zeilmaker Chair is made in Italy of lacquered beechwood. Rietveld’s Red Blue Chair is a design in MoMA’s collection.
