Tatou Pendant Light
“The process began by looking for different ways to reconstruct membranes, conceived like Japanese armor: a series of metal buckles cleverly united by tapes with a powerful emotional value,” explains Tatou pendant light designer Patricia Urquiola, a designer represented in MoMA’s collection. Its name is French for armadillo, the armored animal protected by an organic structure of overlapping scales. Applied to a perforated polycarbonate diffuser, these inspirations produce a remarkable filtration of light. Hang as statement-making lighting for a dining area or over a library table. Its socket accommodates either a compact fluorescent or a halogen bulb. Made in Italy by Flos, a manufacturer which reproduces many of the iconic lighting designs in the MoMA collection.

Now based in Milan, Patricia Urquiola studied architecture at Madrid Polytechnic and the Politecnico di Milano University, where she worked on her thesis with Achille Castiglioni (and later served as his assistant lecturer). With the architectural firm de Renzio and Ramerino, she specialized in architectural design for showrooms, restaurants, and franchising.
Urquiola established her own studio in 2001, specializing in product design, architecture, and installations. MoMA’s collection includes three examples of her work.
