MoMA Exclusive: This white-painted iron side table creates a balance between art and functionality. The design projects a strong graphic expression inspired by Kanji, Chinese characters used in Japanese writing. Heavy and sturdy, this versatile table can be used throughout your home, as a bedside or coffee table (it’s large enough for a cup of coffee and a few magazines.) It can also be used to display some of your favorite objets. It also makes a statement just on its own. Nendo’s work is represented in MoMA’s collection.
Why We Chose This
Oki Sato, the designer who founded Nendo Studio, is the creator of the Cabbage Chair, a design object in MoMA's collection. Designed in 2007 as response to a challenge from fashion designer Issey Miyake, the chair utilizes the heaps of paper that are a by-product of the pleating process of many of Miyake's designs. Nendo Studio's work has also been featured in several MoMA exhibitions, including Action! Design over Time (2010-11) and Design and the Elastic Mind (2008).
In or Related to MoMA's Collection
The Museum of Modern Art established the world's first curatorial department devoted to architecture and design. MoMA Design Store carries a selection of design objects from that collection. We only offer authorized versions in the colors and materials selected by the original designers. MoMA's design collection is ever-changing, a reflection of the evolving field of design itself.
