This famous polo shirt was first introduced by designer Ralph Lauren in 1972. The MoMA Exclusive version is a reproduction of the original dark-green “weathered mesh” polo shirt from Ralph Lauren’s iconic 1980 ad that featured the tagline, “It gets better with age.” This version features a reproduction of the original label from the ‘80s, the same yarn count (20s single combed cotton yarn) and the “Polo Pony” logo in the original 1 1/8” size. The color is also true to the original and has been dyed to achieve a desired weathered and worn patina—another characteristic of the original design.
This exclusive design is inspired by MoMA’s exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern?, on view from October 1, 2017 through January 28, 2018. The exhibition explores the past and present—and in some cases also the future—of 111 items that have had a strong impact on history and society in the 20th and 21st centuries.
