Employing a wide variety of materials from paint to neon light François Morellet began making abstract work around 1950. He applied the rules of basic mathematics to his compositions which were often determined by systems mixing random and humor or by a series of rubrics he devised for each work. The SUPERGEOMETRIC collection from the UNIQLO at MoMA collaboration envisions the essential elements of geometry – line form and color--and their potential to take on new forms. François Morellet’s work is represented in MoMA’s collection.
