Rick Owens was one of the three designers MoMA Design Store commissioned to create their modern interpretation of the classic symmetrically patterned square scarf. For this design, Owens takes a theoretical approach to the traditional symmetrical design of the square silk scarf. This scarf features an image of a sculpture by Italian Futurist artist THAYAHT whose name, when written entirely in uppercase letters, is a bifrontal palindrome: Its visual symmetry can be read from right to left, left to right, and as its own mirror reflection. Produced in a limited edition of 50. Made in Italy of silk. Dry clean only.
This limited-edition design is inspired by MoMA’s exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern?, on view from October 1, 2017 through January 28, 2018. The exhibition explores the past and present—and in some cases also the future—of 111 items that have had a strong impact on history and society in the 20th and 21st centuries.
