Aalto Glass - Set of Two
Description
As fresh today as it was when it was introduced more than 80 years ago, Aino Marsio- Aalto's timeless glassware balances modern functionalism with a soft, distinctively Scandinavian execution of line. Wife and design partner of Alvar Aalto, Aino was a talented and influential designer in her own right and helped bring modern design into domestic interiors. With an alluring fluid form and stackable, space-saving functionality, Aalto's ribbed glasses received acclaim immediately—winning second prize at the prestigious Karhula-Iittala competition in 1934 as well as the gold prize at the Milan Triennale in 1936—and ultimately helped bring contemporary Finnish glass design to international notice. The enduring characteristic of this series is its waved silhouette, which was inspired by the ripples created when a stone is cast into water. Originally named, "Bölgeblick", the title is derived from the Swedish "Bölje";, which, like the designer's surname, means "wave."; These iconic glasses are in MoMA's collection and were featured in the exhibition Designing Modern Women.
