Cinque Stelle Stainless Steel Flatware
Description
MoMA Exclusive: Flatware that’s suited for people of different tastes and cultures is what Ettore Sottsass, a designer in MoMA’s collection, aspired to with this 24-piece flatware set (six settings of a fork, knife, soup spoon and tea spoon). The pieces are not meant to be reserved for special occasions, but for everyday living—“the peaceful normality of simple things, of high quality, that work well” in the words of the designer. The pieces have a medium-weight, elegant feel in the hand.

Ettore Sottsass was an Italian architect and designer whose work has been featured in numerous MoMA exhibitions, including Recent Acquisitions: Design Collection (1970-1) and Shaping Modernity: Design 1880–1980 (2009-10). Using color, form and styling, he is credited with bringing office designs into the realm of popular culture like his iconic 1968 design of the Valentine Portable Typewriter represented in MoMA’s collection. In 1981, Sottass founded the Memphis Group, which designed Postmodern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass and metal objects until 1987.
