MoMA Exclusive: This special edition of the NY Yankees Cap was produced by New Era, the cap’s original manufacturer, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and WorldPride celebrations in New York City this June. The Rainbow Flag logo that appears on this adjustable cap’s right side represents the Rainbow Flag designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. The most enduring symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement, the Rainbow Flag was acquired by MoMA for its collection in June 2015—on the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its historic decision to legalize same-sex marriage across the country.
This adjustable cap by New Era, a company that has been manufacturing baseball caps since the 1930s, features the MoMA logo, New Era logo and the MLB (Major League Baseball) emblem. The New Era NY Yankees Cap was featured in MoMA’s exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern? The Yankees Pride Hat is available in Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple, representing all six colors of the Rainbow Flag.
