Artek Aalto “Beehive” Pendant Light A331
Designed in 1953, the Pendant Light A331—nicknamed the “Beehive”—is Alvar Aalto’s most popular lighting design. Composed of hand-spun aluminum and several rows of perforated steel rings, the A331 was originally designed for Finland’s University of Jyäskylä and it makes a sculptural statement in any space even when unlit. When switched on, it creates a warm, diffuse light. Both Alvar Aalto and the Pendant Light A331’s manufacturer, Artek, are represented in MoMA’s collection.
