Why We Chose This
Dutch designers Scholten & Baijings are known for the subtlety of their designs and skillful use of color. With the Penumbra clock, they wanted to create an illusion. In order for only the neon tips of the hands to appear through the frosted dome and for the back of the clock to cast it's orange shadow on the wall, a custom clock case needed to be developed. The resultant case is essentially two convex pieces that combine to achieve the desired floating effect.
Function plays a large role in defining good design. When designers look at an object, they don't just consider its aesthetic appearance—they should also challenge it to be more versatile, to respond to the user's need, or to achieve its purpose more elegantly. Good design has the capacity to solve problems that sometimes we didn't even know we had. This is one of the ways design touches and enriches our everyday life.
