X-Large Bumble Hoptimist Lamp
Description

MoMA Exclusive: Bring a big dose of optimism and fun to your desk or night table with this X-Large Bumble Hoptimist Lamp. This springy, warm LED light is based on Gustav Ehrenreich’s Hoptimist desk toy from the 1960s—the “ambassador” of that era’s happy movement in Denmark. Designed to make every day joyful, it’s also perfect as a bedside night light. The X-Large Bumble Hoptimist Lamp is made of ABS plastic, measures 9h x 6" diam. And is powered by a standard plug-in with a 72”-long black cord. Touch-sensitive power and dimmer control is on the cord. Tap the power symbol to turn the light on or off, and touch and hold to adjust the light brightness.

Technical Specifications:

  • Warm LED (approximately 50,000 hours of use)
  • 2700 kelvin
  • 800 lumen per meter
  • Touch-sensitive control with dimmer
  • 72”l standard plug-in power cord
  • 4 Watt
Why We Chose This
Even though Gustav Ehrenreich was an internationally recognized craftsman in the 1950s and mid-'60s, he found his true calling in life when he designed a springy toy in 1968 and launched Denmark's happy movement. The Hoptimist announced itself with the bright, primary colors that were popular during this time, and was cast from the same plastic as another classic Danish toy, Lego bricks. In 2011, the Hoptimist became the main sponsor of the Danish Hospital Clowns, donating money to the organization for each one sold. The Hoptimist illustrates the Museum's committment to creating a dialogue about design for children, as in MoMA's 2012 exhibition Century of the Child: Growing by Design 1900-2000.
