For this linden wood design, Mama Bird with Four Babies Nesting Doll, designer Aamu Song and Johan Olin—founders of the Helsinki-based design brand COMPANY—traveled to Russia. Their mission was to research the manufacturing secrets of nesting, or matryoshka dolls. Their travels took them from Moscow to Urais, into Siberia and the Caucuses, resulting in collaborations with many traditional manufacturers.
From these collaborations, this Mama Bird with Four Babies Nesting Doll was born. The design visualizes how a mother bird feeds her babies. Each Mama Bird with Four Babies Nesting Doll is handmade by matryoshka masters who employ age-old traditions to create these modern designs.
