MoMA Exclusive: For this Shapes & Colors Throw, designer Osamu Mita was inspired by gachapon—Japanese vending-machine-dispensed capsules which contain randomly selected surprise toys. The throw features 15 different patterns placed inside circles that evoke the toy capsules. The patterns were created with a double-jacquard using two types of threads. The result is a partially raised texture with a 3D effect. Osamu Mita has work in MoMA’s collection and his designs were featured in the Museum’s 1998 exhibition Structure and Surface: Contemporary Japanese Textiles. This warm Mita Shapes & Colors Throw is made from 75% wool and 25% acrylic in Kiryu, Japan. It measures 75l x 43.5"w. Dry clean only.

Why We Chose This
The designer of the Mita Throw, Osamu Mita, is represented in MoMA's collection through a selection of contemporary Japanese textiles created by Mita and other notable designers. Produced using traditional techniques paired with technological innovations, the textiles are considered revolutionary because of the way they "alter the habitual relationship between the shape of the body and the light and air around it."
