Introduced in 1932, Couto Toothpaste has been “on everyone’s mouth” ever since, as their advertisements say. The fresh and minty fluoride-free formula was created in Porto by Alberto Ferreira do Couto, a pharmaceutical manager, along with the help of a dentist friend. Focused on highlighting traditional products of Portugal, the small, Lisbon-based, women-owned shop A Vida Portuguesa has now reintroduced it to a new generation. The classic packaging remains unchanged, with a bright yellow box housing the silver aluminum tube. Not tested on animals. The A Vida Portuguesa Couto Toothpaste is available in sizes Small (0.88 oz.) and Large (2.1oz.).

Why We Chose This
Here at MoMA Design Store, we have always championed the tradition of original products, made with care by local artisans. This everyday design was sourced by A Vida Portuguesa, a small Lisbon-based shop focused on goods made in Portugal. A Vida Portuguesa celebrates brands that have survived the passage of time and highlights the quality of Portuguese manufacturing and design.
