The Aalto Vase is represented in MoMA's collection and was featured in the Museum's 1938 Alvar Aalto: Architecture and Furniture, the first show dedicated to a living architect.
Breaking away from the rigid, straight lines of the 1930s, the vase's revolutionary wavy design draws direct inspiration from the fluid curves of the natural world.
Even after 90 years, each vase is mouth-blown by master artisans into molds at the Iittala factory in Finland, ensuring no two pieces are alike.
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a renowned Finnish architect, designer and town planner who is credited with creating designs that had a profound impact on the trajectory of modernism before and after World War II. Many examples of his furniture are represented in MoMA’s collection and have been featured in the Museum’s exhibitions, including Alvar Aalto: Architecture and Furniture (1938) and How Should We Live? Prepositions for the Modern Interior (2016–2017).
