By Carolyn Lanchner

Through his art, ideas, and style, Andy Warhol made an indelible mark on the history of modern art and on popular culture. This book features ten paintings by Warhol selected from The Museum of Modern Art’s substantial collection of his work. His famous Gold Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s Soup Cans are here, along with other equally groundbreaking and iconic silkscreen paintings—from his early work of 1961 to The Last Supper, a painting in progress at the time of his death, in 1987.

Lively texts by Carolyn Lanchner, a former curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum, accompany the works, illuminating the significance of each one and placing it in its historical moment in the development of modern art and in Warhol’s life.48 pp.; 40 illus.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was an American artist, film director, producer and the most well-known participant of the Pop art movement. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Warhol moved to New York City in the 1950s where he initally worked as a commercial illustrator. By the late 1950s, he began exhibiting his work in several galleries. An early adopter of the silk screen printmaking process, he created now instantly recognizable works, many of which are represented in MoMA's collection, including Campbell's Soup Cans (1962), Two Dollar Bill (1962) and Double Elvis (1963). His artworks have been featured in numerous MoMA exhibitions, including Recent Drawing U.S.A. (1956), Andy Warhol: A Retrospective (1989), Andy Warhol: Screen Tests (2003) and Automania (2021–2022).
