Anni Albers, a foremost textile designer of the 20th century, made major innovations in the field of functional materials. An adventurous graphic artist and important figure in the Bauhaus, she took printmaking technique into a previously uncharted territory. Her 1925 tapestry Wall Hanging is the inspiration for the face of this watch, a collaboration between The Albers Foundation and Projects Watches. The design interprets her tapestry as mesmerizing layers of circles, which turn as the minutes pass. Color blocks from the tapestry become indicators of the time: red for the hours, blue for the minutes, yellow for the seconds. The Anni Albers 1925 Watch is made from stainless steel with a 40mm case. The brown leather band measures 9.5l x 0.75”w. It runs on a Maxcell SR626SW battery. Anni Albers’ work is represented in MoMA’s collection.

Why We Chose This
An important female figure in the Bauhaus, Anni Albers is credited with blurring the lines between traditional craft and art. The inspiration for the face of this watch, a tapestry Albers created in 1925, draws from her gouache on paper work Design for Wall Hanging from the same year. That artwork, in MoMA's collection, has been featured in two exhibitions at the Museum: Gunta Stölz and Anni Albers (1990) and Making Choices (2000).
