Channel your inner jewelry designer with this Necklace Kit based on original designs by Anni Albers, an artist with work in MoMA’s collection and featured in the Museum’s exhibition Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction, on view April 20 through September 13, 2025. Each DIY set is inspired by a piece from a 1941 traveling exhibition of jewelry made from common objects by Albers and Black Mountain College colleague Alex Reed. Known for her textile designs, Albers held the belief that everyday materials, such as washers and bobby pins, could look "quite beautiful and even precious."  This easy-to-follow project is a wonderful translation of their art and perfect for a craft night spent solo or with friends.

Why We Chose This
Designed by Anni Albers and Alex Reed in the early 1940s, these jewelry kits may be composed of everyday items, such as bobby pins and washers, but they were inspired by priceless gems. "The first stimulus to make jewelry from hardware came to us from the treasure of Monte Albán, the most precious jewels from ancient Mexico, found only a few years ago in a tomb near Oaxaca," Albers explained in her talk at Black Mountain College in 1942. Some of Albers' and Reed's designs were featured in the 1946 MoMA exhibition Modern Handmade Jewelry
Anni Albers
Anni Albers

German-Jewish visual artist and printmaker Anni Albers (1899–1994) was a leading textile artist of the 20th century and is credited with blurring the lines between traditional craft and art. Many of her works represented in MoMA's collection are textile designs, a craft she learned when she studied at the Bauhaus in the Weimar Republic. Albers' work has been featured in over 30 MoMA exhibitions over the years, starting in 1938, with Bauhaus: 1919–1928 and most recently in Woven Histories Textiles and Modern Abstraction on view at MoMA beginning April 2025.
