Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a renowned Finnish architect, designer and town planner known for synthesizing romantic and pragmatic ideas. He is credited with creating designs that had a profound impact on the trajectory of modernism before and after World War II. Many examples of this furniture are represented in MoMA’s collection and have been featured in the Museum’s exhibitions, including Alvar Aalto: Architecture and Furniture (1938) and How Should We Live? Prepositions for the Modern Interior1> (2016–2017).
