Originally intended as a seat to cool off on after being inside a sauna, the Pirkka Stool segued into becoming a furniture piece that brings a rustic touch to clean, modern interiors. Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955, the stool’s legs are made from black lacquered solid birch wood, with a seat composed of two pieces of curved, brown-stained pine wood. The opening between the seat’s two pieces functions as a handle, so you can easily move the Pirkka around your home wherever you need a stool. The Pirkka Stool stands 17.25” high with a seat that’s 17.5w x 11”d. It’s made in Finland by Artek, a manufacturer with work in MoMA’s collection.
